Salsa classes

Salsa is a vibrant and lively social dance style that originated in Cuba and was further developed in New York City. Known for its rhythmic footwork, energetic turns and close partner connection, salsa has become one of the most popular Latin dances worldwide. It combines elements of Afro-Cuban, Jazz, and Latin American dance styles, creating a dynamic fusion of movements and expressions.

Key Elements of Salsa Dance:

  • Basic Step Patten: Salsa is typically danced in an eight count rhythm, where dancers step on counts 1, 2, 3, and pause on 4, then step again on 5,6,7, with a pause on 8. This foundational step creates the distinct rhythm that defines salsa.
  • Partner Work and Connection: Salsa is primarily a partner dance, involving close coordination and often requiring a strong lead-follow dynamic. Dancers use various holds and spins to create fluid and connected movements.
  • Turns and Spins: Salsa incorporates many turns and spins, which add excitement and flair. These can include simple single turns, cross-body leads, and more complex patterns, often involving both partners turning simultaneously.
  • Hip Movement : The signature salsa hip movement, often called "Cuban motion," involves the rotation of the hips and body, adding fluidity and rhythm to each step.
  • Expressive Style: Salsa is an expressive dance, where dancers bring their personality into the moves. It's often playful, with dancers using styling techniques like arm movements, body rolls, and dips to enhance the performance.
